Centre for Gender Studies and Diversity

The Centre for Gender Studies and Diversity (ZfGD) is the coordination office for women’s studies, gender studies, equal rights and diversity at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.

Women’s studies in the context of music and theatre studies concerns the history and significance of female composers, musicians, music teachers, actors and directors.

Gender studies in the context of music and theatre studies focuses on reflecting how society perceives and classifies people in relation to their gender identity in music and theatre.

Research-led courses and guest lectures, conferences and publications explore the various topic areas. The Centre for Gender Studies engages with the topic of diversity to raise awareness of the rich variety in the KUG community. It develops strategic measures and further education programmes to meet the specific needs of students and staff.

The Centre for Gender Studies engages with the topic of equal rights together with the Working Committee on Equal Opportunities (AKG) in order to implement the constitutional and legal requirements on equal rights for all members of the KUG community. This primarily involves ensuring that nobody experiences discrimination on account of their gender, ethnicity, faith, worldview, age, sexual orientation or disability. It also means promoting women in male-dominated areas. Another topic is supporting the compatibility of working or studying with family obligations.

The Centre for Gender Studies regularly organises academic and artistic events and collaborations that address aspects of women’s studies, gender studies, equal rights and diversity.
