Gender and Electronic Music Technology (VU) Hannah Bosma

This lecture series explores how electronic music and music technology relate to gender. It starts with introductions into gender studies, feminist musicology and gender and technology studies. Subsequently, the seminars address gender structure and gender symbolism in relation to music technology, electroacoustic/electronic music, glitch and dance/DJ culture, the work of female composers and sound artists, electroacoustic music and music technology in relation to (dis)embodiment, and some case studies. Given the profound gender imbalance in many areas related to music technology and electronic music, it is important that the students learn to recognize this gender imbalance in various practices and situations they will encounter in their professional or academic life, and acquire insights into causes, effects and solutions. To acquire such proficiency, the students will be offered insights from academic research and theories and asked to apply these to various musical examples and to their own musical area.
